Amidst the US visa debate, the Centre contacted the US for a visa, or an emergency travel permit, for the family of Nilam Shinde, who slipped into coma after she was mowed down from behind by a four-wheeler on February 14. One person has been arrested in the US in connection with the accident.
The 35-year-old woman, a post graduate student in the California State University, is now undergoing treatment in a California hospital. She hails from Satara district in Maharashtra.
Reportedly, Shinde suffered injuries to her head, hands, legs and chest. She also underwent an immediate surgery due to the head injury, and since then she has been in coma. Shinde’s mother passed away, a few days ago.
Usually, travel permits for medical emergencies are issued quickly but for Nilam Shinde’s relatives, it has been delayed for reasons unknown.
Reportedly, Nilam’s family applied for a visa 48 hours after the accident and it has been pending since then.
