After the US, United Kingdom had also tightened the immigration rules, which are likely to have significant impact on the Indians.
The British government is planning to introduce the changes in visa and immigration laws to cut the migration and also have control over to those who work and live in the country.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government said the change is necessary to end the “failed experiment” of mass immigration. The announcement was made ahead of the unveiling of “Immigration White Paper” in the Parliament in Monday.
The changes are aimed at reducing immigration figure which stood at 7,28,000 in the 12 months to June 2024. Indian nationals are the largest nationality coming to the UK in that period, accounting for 20 per cent of overall immigration, followed by Nigerian (10 pc) and Pakistani citizens (8 per cent).
To curtail the immigration inflow, the academic and English eligibility threshold has also been raised as part of which only those completing their graduation will be allowed to immigrate into the UK as skilled workers.
As majority of the immigrants enter the health sector, the new rupees will have a major impact on nursing assistants and caregivers. Graduate-level IT professionals, engineers and healthcare professionals are also likely to face problems in gaining entry into the UK.
Migrant Indian families will have more stringent English tests which will make it more difficult to settle as a family. Indian students and workers intending to settle permanently will have to wait for 10 years which is double the existing duration.
