Following Donald Trump government’s announcement about its intention to cancel all remaining financial contracts with the Harvard University, the students, carrying placards, staged a protest opposing Trump’s increasing offensive.
The latest measures of cancelling financial contracts costs $100 million to the university. Trump is seething with anger against the varsity for its refusal to give up control of curriculum, admissions and research.
One of the placards read “Trump=Traitor” and the students raised slogans “who belongs in class today, let them stay” protesting revoking of the University’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification.
The students, led by Harvard Students For Freedom, a newly formed unrecognized student organization, condemned Trump administration’s offensive against democracy and Jewish students, even when Trump administration says the measures are an effort to stamp out campus antisemitism, to provide safety to them.
Currently, the revocation is blocked by a judge. The hearing on the matter is pending for Thursday, the same day as the university’s commencement graduation ceremony.
The students said that international students are their peers, classmates and friends. Trump administration is going to any extent to impose their authoritarian agenda on higher education, they said.
Meanwhile, the White House has doubled down in its offensive against the university staying that instead of Harvard, public money should be diverted to vocational schools that train plumbers and electricians.
Harvard filed extensive legal challenges against the Trump measures, which legal experts say are likely to be overturned by the courts. The alumni is also planning to file a lawsuit separately against Trump on June 9.
