Despite the widespread protests and violence opposing his crackdown on illegal immigrants across several major US cities, US President Donald Trump is unfazed and only got more determined to send back those who unlawfully trespassed onto American soil.
On Sunday, Trump directed federal immigration officials to expand deportations in the cities run by the Democrats. Trump called for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to “do all in their power” to carry out what he termed the “single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.” With the ICE, Trump has specifically targeted large populations of undocumented immigrants in major US cities such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller informed the media that at least 3,000 arrests will be made on a daily basis under ICE, which is way more than the 650-odd arrests per day during the initial months of Trump’s second presidential term. Trump’s administration also ordered concerned officers to not arrest those working at farmlands, hotels, and restaurants, amid concerns about the grave economic impact the arrests might cause to the economic impact on those industries.
Trump’s latest announcement comes following the nationwide peaceful protests against his immigration policy, coinciding with Trump’s 250th U.S. Army anniversary parade in Washington, D.C. Police used tear gas to disperse protesters in Portland, Oregon, and Los Angeles. With Trump landing in Canada for the Group of Seven summit, he credited the deployment of National Guard troops in LA to ensure peaceful protests.
