Not stopping with deportation of international students, US President Donald Trump has floated the idea of deporting US citizens having criminal background. He said that would be his next job. However, legal experts said that this could violate the Constitution.
This idea was floated by Trump during a visit to a migrant detention center in the Florida Everglades. He claimed that some immigrants, who have now become US citizens, had committed serious crimes. “They’re not new to our country. They’re old to our country. Many of them were born in our country. I think we ought to get them the hell out of here, too, if you want to know the truth,” he said.
Trump admitted that he was not sure about the legal basis for his proposal. We’ll have to find that out legally. I’m just saying if we had the legal right to do it, I would do it in a heartbeat, he said.
Significantly, Trump made these remarks just a few weeks after assistant attorney general Brett Shumate, appointed by Trump, issued a memo asking US attorneys to pursue denaturalization cases that align with the government policy. The memo enclosed a list of citizens involved in crimes such as torture, war crimes, human trafficking and human rights violations as the main targets.
However, experts warned Trump that deporting naturalized citizens based on criminal activity alone could breach the Eighth Amendment in the Constitution, which prohibits cruel punishment.
