Scamming Multiple Startups: A Wake Up Call For Indian Techies

Indian software developer Soham Parekh sparked a discussion about ethics and integrity in the US tech industry. Parekh is facing moonlighting accusations as he had been working as a full-time employee in 3-4 US startups at the same time, from India Working in multiple organisations in multiple roles at the same time raises doubts over transparency in the work culture.

Parekh was fired by all the startups for which he was working after Playground AI founder Suhail Doshi put out a public warning on X and even shared his CV online. The tweet became viral clocking 13 million views, making Soham known to the entire world. Doshi accused Soham of deceiving and scamming various startups, many from the prestigious Y Combinator accelerator.

Fired for Dishonesty

Doshi also mentioned on social media platform that he had fired Parekh within a week of hiring him for dishonesty. Founders of other startups like LIndy, Fleet AI, and Antimetal recalled how they had hired Parekh impressed by his intelligence but terminated his services after discovering his multiple commitments. However, all of them were happy with Parekh’s interview skills.

Despite the controversy, Parekh did not respond but Doshi shared a private message he claimed to have received from Parekh, which seemed to be regretful.

“Have I completely sabotaged my career? What can I do to improve my situation? I am also happy to come clean,” the message read, showing Parekh asking for advice.

Soham’s resume listed out impressive tenures at various AI startups but Doshi termed it as ‘probably 90% fake’ because he could be working for many companies simultaneously in a clandestine manner. The incident raises issues over remote work. With employees now based across the world, founders are worried that it has made things for the employees to work for multiple companies without being caught.

New Job

Soham’s case serves as a wake-up call for many Silicon Valley companies and Indian youth too. While the companies should reconsider their hiring process and devise a strategy to conduct background checks in a remote-first world. At the same time, it should make the Indian youth to stop being oversmart and greedy, getting employed excessively in thirst of money, as it raises serious doubts over their integrity and authenticity. Earning money from multiple sources would sound fancy but managing the pressure and meeting deadlines would prove to be a challenge.

Amid the backlash against Soham and terminating him from multiple jobs, one AI startup founder has taken a different approach and offered him a job. Conor Brennan-Burke, the found of AI company HyperSpell, said he believe in second chances. Burke also shared the email he wrote to Parekh, offering him an engineering role in his company.
