With a powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.8 striking Russia’s sparsely populated far eastern Kamchatka peninsula early this morning, strong tremors and tsunamis up to four metres (12 ft) rose across the Pacific Ocean. Admist this, several videos appeared on social media showing the buildings shaking due to the seismic activity.
Russia’s state-controlled international news network, RT, shared a video claiming that it showed a cancer hospital in Kamchatka. The footage shows an operation theatre of the hospital with doctors performing a surgery, as the earthquake struck the area.
The video shows the doctors remaining calm despite the tremors and continuing the operation till the end. The RT reported that the doctors said that the surgery went well and the patient was recovering.
After the earthquake, the ports on the Kamchatka Peninsula near the quake’s epicenter flooded due to tremors, and residents rushed inland seeking safety. The high-magnitude earthquake generated tsunami warnings and advisories for a section of the Pacific, including Alaska, Hawaii and the US West Coast. Japan also was struck by tremors that triggered a tsunami and alerts were issued as far as China and New Zealand.
People in affected areas of Japan were shifted to evacuation centres, and people recollected the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that caused reactor meltdowns at a nuclear power plant. However, on Wednesday, no abnormalities were reported in the operations of the Japan’s nuclear plants.
