Georgian Authorities Treat Indians “Like Cattle”

Some Foreign countries continue to ill-treat Indians visiting their nations. In a latest incident, a woman has alleged that 56 Indian travelers, including her, were subjected to “most inhuman behavior” by Georgian authorities, when they tried to enter the country from Armenia. The woman, Dhruvee Patel, in her Instagram post shared that despite possessing valid e-visa and documents, their group was put to humiliation and prolonged detention at the Sadakhlo border, the primary land crossing between Armenia and Georgia.

In the post, she mentioned that the group was treated just like cattle when they were made to sit on the footpath. “The group was made to wait 5+ hours in freezing cold – no food, no toilet.” The officials also “confiscated passports for 2+ hrs with no communication. The authorities took videos of the group “like criminals”, but stopped the group members from filming the incident. Without checking the documents, the officials simply claimed visas were “wrong”, calling the treatment “shameful & unacceptable.”

She tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs minister S Jaishankar and said: “India must take a strong stand.” She ended the post with a sharp rebuke. “This is how Georgia treats Indians. Shameful & unacceptable!”

Netizens responded to the post in a significant number, with many others sharing similar experiences. One of them conveyed his sympathy but highlighted that the issue appears longstanding. Another questioned why should Indians still visit the place despite such insulting.

“When this behavior has been consistent from Georgia then why do Indians keep going there.” Yet another user commented that there have been consistent reports of racial profiling by the Georgian government, and he shared a link to another news article detailing Indians’ troubles. Another netizen, who visited Georgia in 2019 recalled that before entering from Russia they had heard similar stories about immigration. However, he said that the authorities had been creating problems for Indians for the last few years.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has not responded to the post so far.
