In a landmark step for Indian higher education, nine leading British universities will soon open campuses in India. The announcement was made during UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to India, where he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed stronger ties in education, research and innovation.
The expansion means Indian students will now have the chance to earn a UK-quality degree without leaving the country. Till now, lakhs of students had to spend huge amounts on visas, travel, and high living costs to study abroad. With these campuses, that dream will become more affordable and accessible.
The University of Southampton has already set up a campus in Gurugram, and more are on the way. Universities such as Liverpool, York, Aberdeen, Bristol, Lancaster, and Surrey are preparing to establish campuses in cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has already cleared approvals for Lancaster and Surrey.
For students, this is a big advantage. They can pursue internationally recognised courses closer to home while still benefiting from UK-standard teaching. For parents, it means less financial burden. For the UK, it helps their universities earn more revenue and expand their global reach, especially at a time when demand for higher education in India is rising fast.
However, fees may still be on the higher side compared to Indian universities, and students must check whether the curriculum and degrees fully match those in the UK. Competition for admission may also be tough, given the popularity of these institutions.
Overall, this move is being hailed as a “win-win” for both countries. It promises more opportunities for Indian youth and strengthens the educational partnership between India and the UK.
