New US Rule Causes Delay in H1B Visa Processing!

The US Department of State has expanded online background checks for H 1B visa holders and their H 4 dependents. This new rule came into effect from December 15, 2025 and applies to applicants from all countries, including India.

Under this policy, visa officers will now review the social media and online activity of H 1B and H 4 applicants as part of the regular visa screening process. Applicants are expected to keep their social media profiles public so officials can check their online presence. The goal, according to the US government, is to prevent misuse of the H 1B program and identify any potential security concerns.

Earlier, such online checks were mainly done for student and exchange visas. With this expansion, professional work visas have also come under stricter review. The screening is not aimed at any specific country but will be followed globally.

Because of the additional checks, visa processing is expected to take longer. In countries like India, where H1B demand is high, several visa appointments have already been postponed. US consulates have reportedly reduced the number of daily interviews, which has led to longer waiting periods. Some applicants may now have to wait months for new dates.

The US Embassy has advised applicants to apply as early as possible and be prepared for delays. Those who travel to India for visa stamping could face uncertainty if appointments get rescheduled.

While the government says the move is meant to stop fraud and protect national security, it has raised concerns among workers and employers. Many professionals worry about privacy, as personal online content may now affect visa decisions. Companies that depend on foreign talent are also concerned about employees getting stuck outside the US.
