Not too long ago, the United States was approving visas in large numbers under the Joe Biden administration. However, the situation has changed drastically under the Donald Trump administration. Now, instead of gaining new visas, even existing visas are being revoked on a daily basis.
According to the latest communication from the United States Department of State, the country has revoked a total of one lakh visas so far.
The State Department revealed that more than 100,000 visas have been cancelled, including around 8,000 student visas and 2,500 specialized visas. These belonged to individuals who had encounters with US law enforcement for criminal activities.
The fact that over one lakh US visas have been revoked indicates the strong stance taken by the authorities. Notably, 8,000 of these cancelled visas fall under the student category, which is a major point of concern.
US authorities have started revoking visas even for minor offences such as mall thefts, DUI cases, and other violations. Due to this, Indian students and temporary visa holders are being advised to strictly follow local laws and regulations.
The Department of State further stated that it will continue deportations and visa cancellations if individuals are found to be a threat to the safety of the country.
