There are many Indians holding key roles in US politics, while several tech professionals, especially Telugus, are successfully leading major US tech giants. Yet some individuals are bringing disrepute to the Indian community in the country by resorting to illegal activities, deception, and violence.
In an undercover operation in New Mexico, police arrested four people, including a Telugu man from India, for the sexual exploitation of minors. The Indian accused was identified as Balkam Nagaraju.
Recognising that a few youth were exploiting minors, the police opened social media accounts, posing as minors. They began chatting with a few suspected youth and on confirming that they were involved in the illegal activity, the police detained four youth.
Over 89 people with their roots in India are on the US list of ‘Worst of the Worst’ criminals. The database launched by the US Department of Homeland Security kept it open for public and it includes names, pictures, crimes and nationalities of the convicted.
Such incidents, though involving only a small number of individuals, end up casting a shadow on the larger Indian community abroad. At a time when Indians are earning global recognition in various sectors, such unlawful actions dent that reputation. It also serves as a reminder that individuals representing the country overseas carry a larger responsibility to uphold the values and credibility associated with India.
