A military plane of Columbia ( South America) carrying nearly 125 people on board crashed shortly after takeoff in the south of the country, near the border with Peru. This is the second crash that Colombia had witnessed in less than three months.
The unfortunate incident took place as a plane, a Lockheed Martin Hercules C-130 model, was transporting military troops before ending up in disaster deep in Colombia’s southern Amazon region on Monday morning.
As per reliable reports, at least 34 people have been killed in this crash and many are severely injured. The rescue operations are currently underway and dozens of people are still missing. There were 114 passengers and 11 crew members inside the plane.
The exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined, Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez said, adding that there is no indication of an attack by criminal groups. However, it is believed that the plane hit the ground just one and a half kilometers away from where it took off, and ammunition being carried on board detonated as a result of a fire on the aircraft.
Some of the injured soldiers were quickly transported to the capital Bogotá for treatment and the search for missing individuals is going on. The casualties might increase due to the magnitude of the crash..
C-130 cargo planes are widely used and capable of operating in remote and adverse conditions. However, the flight crashed immediately after take off due to a technical snag. More details are still awaited.
