KTR’s Reality Check on Reverse Migration from the US

The volume of the Indian population that had been travelling to the United States for employment opportunities and higher studies had  been growing exponentially in recent years. But due to the ongoing situation and crunch in the job market due to AI, finding new jobs has become virtually impossible.

On that note, there was a very interesting discussion that happened between former IT minister of Telangana KTR, who visited the US and took the occasion to interact with Telugu students there.

This was precisely when Telugu students had asked KTR about the possibility of reverse migration back to India as it is hard to find jobs in the US. They questioned KTR if India and particularly Hyderabad has the job infrastructure to accommodate the reverse migration.

KTR replied that it is impossible for any leader to assist the current job market due to the AI impact and also the subsequent recession.

“In the US, you at least know what is the number of students who are on job search and their academic metrics. But back in India, there is a much bigger volume of job aspirants. Accommodating all of them in the job market is a tricky situation. It is impossible for any contemporary politician to comprehend this. So I can’t make any assumptions or conclusions now.”

KTR added that there was once a time when the governments themselves used to encourage students to travel abroad for studies and work. But the cycle has broken loose now, and a large volume of students are travelling to other countries by their own, which has become a phenomena these days.

It appears that reverse migration back to India, and particularly Hyderabad is a very volatile question. What is for certain is that the job market is definitely in a tough position and students will have to be prepared for long waits and more competition.
