Tragedy in NZ : India student dies after drowning

Unfortunate tragedies involving Indian students who go to abroad for higher studies often make headlines back home. We have seen numerous such incidents in which several Indians died due to road accidents and other mishaps. Now, another heartbreaking news about Indian origin student has been reported from New Zealand.

Recently, a 21‑year‑old Indian‑origin engineering student named Shaurya Sriram died after drowning in Lake Taupō, New Zealand, while on an Easter holiday trip with friends. By the time he pulled out of the lake, Sriram was unconscious and couldn’t be saved despite immediate medical assistance.

The student from the University of Auckland went on a outing with friends on April 5 as it was a long weekend due to Easter holiday. He got down into the river to swim in it, but unfortunately died due to asphyxiation as he was unable to come out it. A friend immediately pulled him out of the water and tried to resuscitate him. However, he didn’t respond and died on spot.

Sriram was studying Engineering at the University and turned 21 on March 1st. His new academic year started just a week ago. His parents in Mumbai are devastated with the tragic news and couldn’t come to senses due to the loss of their son. Both parents were once permanent residents of New Zealand, but repatriated to India.

Friends and relatives are trying to arrange for the return of mortal remains to India for final rites.
