Telugu Student In US Convicted Of Deceiving Vietnam National

A Telugu student was convicted for cheating a Vietnamese man, in the US. Venkateswara Chagamreddy was living in San Antonio on a student visa. A federal court concluded that Chagamreddy, along with his aide, planned to deceive an old man in August last year. However, the court delivered the verdict recently.

An old man, living in Delaware County in Oklahoma, called up a number assuming he would speak to a computer technical support team member. However, the person at the other end tried to create anxiety in the old man saying that some criminal activities were going on in the computer wing.

However, he soon informed the old man that a federal officer would help him in resolving his issue, which the Vietnam man believed was true.

After a couple of days, a person called him up claiming to be a federal officer and even gave his identity number, though fake. He told the old man that he needed to convert the cash into gold and then deposit in the treasury department, as part of the investigation. Trusting in his words, the victim did as directed by the ‘federal officer’.

Then Chagamreddy went to the old man’s house and collected the gold, saying he would deposit in the treasury. After a few days, the accused called up the old man and demanded that he repeat the conversion exercise. Understanding that he was deceived, the old man, with the help of his family members, lodged a complaint with the police. The cops arrested Chagamreddy in last August.

Just before reaching to the Vietnam man, Chagamreddy picked up gold from another 75-year-old woman in Kansas.
