Indian origin settlers abroad often become victims of random shooting and stabbing incidents. Especially in USA, where a sizeable population of NRIs got settled, these attacks have become more common these days.
In another similar incident, an Indian-origin mother and her daughter were attacked inside a Burbank home, California, on Monday, according to the information shared by the neighbours to local US news outlets.
The duo has been identified Arti Varma and her daughter Meera Varma. Both victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment immediately after the tragedy took place. Unfortunately, 59-year-old Arti Varma died after succumbing to her injuries despite life-saving efforts. Meanwhile, her daughter, Meera (25), is still in the hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Meera Varma is a popular mental health activist who previously worked with high-profile personalities, including former US President Joe Biden, former First Lady Jill Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris, Oprah Winfrey and US Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy, as part of her committed journey to address the youth mental health crisis.
Meanwhile, the Burbank Police Department arrested 30-year-old Sergio Fraire as the prime suspect. Authorities announced that the man was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Further investigation is currently on.
