In an interesting case, an Indian medical student from northern India, identified as Sam (pseudonym), used the generative AI tools on various platforms available online to create an AI-generated blonde, Emily Hart, and made thousands of dollars, fooling scores of netizens, who assumed Hart to be real. While the MAGA policy is proving a threat to the several NRIs in the US, a student from India used the same to rake in the moolah.
Sam, an aspiring orthopaedic surgeon, claimed that he made thousands of dollars after creating a fake AI MAGA influencer, Hart. The AI-generated woman Hart was projected as a pro-MAGA (pro-Trump) influencer and a section of the netizens liked her posts immensely.
Hart had a strong following among conservative users. “The MAGA crowd is made up of dumb people — like, super dumb people. And they fall for it,” 22-year-old Sam told Wired. Sam said he created the fake account when he was studying and was trying to have some savings to shift to the US.
Hart’s posts touched on topics like Christianity, immigration and abortion. Now, the Instagram and Facebook pages for Hart have been taken down. In February, the Instagram page for Emily Hart was banned after it was cited for “fraudulent” activity. The fake profile of Hart claimed she was a nurse and looked like Hollywood actress Jennifer Lawrence.
According to a statement, Meta, which handles Instagram and Facebook, said it works to identify content generated or edited using AI outside of ads on our platforms, and label it to promote transparency.
One of Hart’s posts read: “Trump should tell all the illegals that he will give them citizenship if they vote Republican and see how fast Democrats want them out of the country.” Sam told the media firm that he launched the accounts planning to create and sell AI-generated images of a woman wearing bikini, for which he used Google’s Gemini AI platform.
At the same time, Sam feared he would have to face competition from millions of other models if he created a generic ‘hot girl’. He took the help of Gemini to make his AI woman more appealing and it suggested he go with MAGA niche. He targeted especially the older men in the US, as they often are loyal followers and have more money to spend.
Hart was shown to be doing activities like ice fishing, handling guns and drinking beer. Every reel Sam posted got millions of views. “The algorithm loved it. Within a month, Hart had more than 10,000 followers on Instagram and many of them subscribed to softcore AI-generated content on the OnlyFans competitor Fanvue, where Sam sold MAGA apparel too.
However, Sam told Wired that he has no regrets for making Emily Hart nor does he feel like he ‘scammed people’. He said that he spend around 30-50 minutes daily on creating the posts and made good money from it. “In India, even in professional jobs, you can’t make this amount of money.” Sam said that he wanted to make money online and created Emily Hart. “I haven’t seen any easier way to make money online.”
