Indian-Origin Crime Cases in Canada Under Scrutiny

It is quite shocking that Indian nationals staying in USA and Canada are repeatedly finding themselves behind the bars for several unlawful activities. Most of the times, the crimes committed appear to be intentional and purely for the sake of monetary benefits. Recently, there has been a sharp rise in such cases despite the fact that the laws are so stringent in these countries.

Now, Canadian police have arrested four Indian-origin men in connection with a kidnapping and extortion case linked to rising violence in the South Asian community in Calgary. The fifth suspect is still at large with police teams on the manhunt for his whereabouts.

According to Calgary Police, the incident began on May 6 when a man was allegedly kidnapped from Edmonton at gunpoint and forced into a vehicle. The victim was then taken to Calgary, where the accused men reportedly tried to pressure him into helping them target another person for extortion.

Police said the victim refused to cooperate, after which he was assaulted again. Later, the suspects allegedly followed the intended extortion target and his wife and threatened them with a firearm before the couple managed to escape and inform police.

Authorities arrested four accused identified as Taranveer Singh, Daksh Gautam, Akashdeep Singh and Pardeep Singh, all residents of Calgary. They are now facing multiple charges, including kidnapping with a firearm, assault, unlawful confinement and weapons-related offences.

Police are still searching for the fifth suspect, identified as Gagandeep Singh, who is believed to have links in Ontario and British Columbia. Officials also revealed that none of the accused are Canadian citizens and that they were staying there under different immigration statuses, including expired work visas and refugee claims.

Calgary police described the case as a major escalation in ongoing extortion-related violence targeting members of the South Asian community. Authorities said dozens of similar incidents have been reported in the city since last year.
