In another embarrassing news for Indian diaspora, an NRI hailing from Gujarat has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in USA for abuse of a minor girl. The accused named Kavan Kumar Patel, aged 27 years, has been convicted after admitting that he had paid to traffickers to sexually exploit a minor girl while working at a hotel.
Kavan Kumar was sentenced to rigorous punishment on two counts of sex trafficking of a minor. He will also serve five years of supervised release after completing his prison term. As the convict was living without any legal visa, he might be deported after serving his punishment.
The case was unearthed after an investigation was launched on January 6, 2025, following a reported theft complaint at an AmericInn hotel in Omaha. During the inquiry, officers identified signs of possible sex trafficking and intensified their operation during which the trafficking racket was busted.
Kavan Kumar admitted that he stole money from cash till of the hotel and paid the traffickers to sexually assault one of the two minor girls. Investigators also found that other hotel employees had been involved. Two staff members allegedly paid traffickers to have sex with one of the girls, while another employee had sex with the second survivor.
After this illicit act, the hotel employees allowed the traffickers and the two minor girls to stay there for several days. The traffickers then advertised commercial sex services online and arranged encounters involving these minor victims. The girls told investigators they were given little food and were forced into the racket.
