In a heartbreaking incident, a 35-year-old Indian sailor has died off the coast of Oman after being denied timely medical assistance, according to the Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI). The deceased, identified as Nishanth, a native of Tamil Nadu, was serving as the Second Officer aboard the commercial vessel MT Celestial.
As per reports, Nishanth fell severely ill while the vessel was stationed near Oman. Unfortunately, the local Port of Duqm had suspended WiFi and communication services due to ongoing regional tensions. Despite desperate pleas for urgent medical evacuation, Omani port authorities failed to respond.
Deprived of medical care, Nishanth tragically passed away onboard on Thursday. The ship’s Captain has accused both the vessel’s owners, Romana Ship Management Co. Ltd., and their local shipping agent of completely ignoring the crew’s repeated emergency calls. He stated that despite notifying the relevant authorities and reaching out to Port Control multiple times, no help ever arrived.
The FSUI has strongly urged international maritime bodies and government authorities to intervene immediately to ensure the handling of the body, and take necessary actions to repatriate Nishanth’s remains to his family in India.
