For the first time in 16 months, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump are going to hold a face-to-face bilateral meeting. This high-profile meeting is set to take place during the upcoming G7 summit on June 16–17 in France.
This will be the first official meeting between the two leaders since PM Modi’s visit to Washington in February 2025, shortly after President Trump’s second inauguration. Moreover, this meeting arrives at a crucial time when the India-US relations are volatile.
Also, both nations are currently going through complex negotiations for a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement in the aftermath recent issues. Hence, they simultaneously look to extend mutual cooperation in technology, economics, and defense strategy.
PM Modi is traveling to France because French President Emmanuel Macron invited him to attend the summit as a special guest. President Trump also plans to use the event to have private meetings with several other world leaders, including the presidents of France and Egypt.
The talks are occurring amid heightened tensions surrounding the Iranian conflict, which has generated severe economic headwinds for India. Furthermore, bilateral relations have been strained by recent US military actions against multiple oil tankers operating with Indian crews off the Omani coast.
So, it would be interesting to see how both leaders engage in this meeting.
