Trump 200% Drug Tariff To Hit Indian Generic Medicine?

Trump is one of the most radical personalities in global politics, and he is always up to something when it comes to creating a problem or two for other countries. Now he appears to be aiming the barrel at India.

Trump has proposed the idea of imposing 200% tariff on generic drugs that are manufactured outside the United States and this could largely affect the Indian market.

A short while back, Trump announced a phased tariff plan for imported generic drugs, 0% tariff until August 2028, 100% from August 2028, and 200% from August 2029. It should not be too long before the generic drug tariff could be reaching 200%.

On one hand, this will dramatically increase the price of imported generic drugs in the US, which would make America’s already-unaffordable drugs even more unaffordable. On the other hand of the Indian market could be seriously affect.

India is widely regarded as the pharmaceutical and drug hub for the world has we are equipped with machinery and labour to produce quality generic drugs at very low price. This is one of the main reasons why India has been one of the leading exporters of pharmaceuticals in the world.

But if Trump actually doubles down on the tariff proposal, then the exports could be getting significantly costly, and this would largely affect this entire market in India. Considering the inconsistency in Trump’s mindset, he can change his stance in the next year or so as well which could be a good thing.
