Indian Arrested in $7.5 Million Fraud in US!

A 21 year old Indian national from Gujarat has been arrested in connection with an alleged multi million dollar fraud scheme targeting elderly people in the United States.

Jay Sunilbharthi Goswami, who was living in Jersey City, New Jersey, has been accused of working as a money mule in the fraud operation. According to US authorities, he allegedly collected cash and gold from elderly victims and handed them over to other members of the network.

Investigators say Goswami was involved in at least nine such incidents in New York and New Jersey. The victims, aged between 59 and 87, reportedly lost around $7.56 million in total.

The fraud scheme came to the attention of the IRS Criminal Investigation Division in January 2026. The suspects allegedly contacted elderly people through phone calls and online platforms, falsely claiming that their bank accounts, money or personal information had been compromised.

The victims were then allegedly pressured into withdrawing their savings or converting their assets into cash, gold or gift cards. In some cases, the fraudsters reportedly posed as law enforcement officials or other authorities to gain the victims’ trust.

US investigators also found that Goswami had deposited more than $90,000 in cash into a Bank of America account between August 2025 and April 2026. Authorities believe the deposits may have been payments for his alleged role in the scheme.

The case took another turn after Goswami allegedly crossed into Canada from the US while he was under pretrial supervision. Authorities said he was planning to travel from Toronto to Doha, Qatar.

Canadian authorities later detained him at Toronto Pearson International Airport and arrested him following a US request for provisional arrest and extradition.

Goswami faces charges including wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The charges carry a maximum possible sentence of 20 years in prison.
