US Removes ‘Mr Singh’ Ad After Indian Backlash

The US Department of Homeland Security has removed a controversial advertisement featuring a fictional “Mr Singh” and asking him to self deport. The post was part of the Trump administration’s immigration campaign and quickly triggered strong criticism from Indian and Sikh communities.

The advertisement showed an AI generated image of a Sikh man and carried a message asking “Mr Singh” to get off American roads. It also used the phrase “self deport or find out.”

The use of Singh in the advertisement became a major point of concern for Indians and Sikhs. Singh is one of the most common surnames among the Sikh community and is widely used by Indian Americans.

Several Sikh and Indian American organisations strongly criticised the post and called it racist and discriminatory. They argued that the advertisement unfairly connected an entire community with illegal immigration and driving related issues.

The controversy also comes at a sensitive time as the US marks the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Sikh groups pointed out that their community has faced racial profiling and attacks in America for years.

Following the backlash, the controversial post was removed from the DHS social media accounts. The episode has once again raised questions over the way the Trump administration is presenting its strict immigration policies to the public.
