Trump May Get Power To Impose 100% Tariffs On India?

The recently concluded BRICS Summit in New Delhi saw major powers like India China and Russia showing stronger coordination on several global issues. The grouping also backed greater use of local currencies and stronger cross-border payment systems as countries look to reduce their dependence on Western financial systems.

Now this growing coordination and India’s continued purchase of Russian oil have once again brought the country into focus in the United States.

The latest development is that US lawmakers are discussing a bill that could allow President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100 % on countries that continue to buy Russian oil. India and China are among the major countries that could be affected.

The US Senate has already passed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 with an 86-11 vote. The bill now faces a crucial debate in the House of Representatives.

A new amendment proposed by Congressman Steny Hoyer seeks to specifically name India China and some other countries under the 100 percent tariff provision. At the same time another amendment introduced by Congressman Gregory Meeks seeks to remove the provision that gives the President the power to impose these tariffs.

The House reportedly has only four working days before its recess making the coming days important for the bill.

However it is important to understand that India has not been hit with a new 100 percent tariff yet. The bill still has to clear the House and become law. Even if it becomes law Trump would have the power to decide whether or not to impose the tariff.

The issue is important for India because Russia remains one of its biggest sources of crude oil. Russian oil has accounted for around half of India’s crude imports during parts of 2026.

If the US eventually imposes a 100 percent tariff on Indian goods it could create serious problems for Indian exporters and make their products much more expensive in the American market.

For now the 100 percent tariff remains a possibility rather than an immediate reality. The coming House debate could decide how seriously this threat develops for India-US trade relations.
