Indian-origin leaders are making their mark in US politics which is proved again in the latest US midterm elections. Democrat leader Aruna Miller, who has Telugu roots and was born in Hyderabad, has won re-election as the Lieutenant Governor of Maryland.
Aruna Miller has made history by securing a second consecutive term in the key position. Her victory highlights the growing presence and influence of Indian-origin leaders in American politics.
Aruna Miller was born on Nov 6, 1964, in Hyderabad to a Telugu family. Her parents migrated to the United States when she was just seven years old. She completed her schooling in New York and later graduated in Civil Engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. She married Dave Miller, and the couple have three children.
Before entering politics, Aruna worked as an engineer in the transportation department. She served in California, Virginia and Hawaii for nearly 25 years, focusing on improving road safety and public transportation facilities. In 1990, she moved to Maryland and settled in Montgomery County.
Aruna later entered politics and became actively involved with the Democratic Party. She was first elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 2010 and served until 2018. During her tenure, she served on several key committees and received recognition for her work through several awards.
Meanwhile, young Democrat Nabeela Syed, who also has roots in Hyderabad, has made history by winning a seat in the Illinois State Senate in the US midterm elections.
The 27-year-old Nabeela, whose parents are from Hyderabad, defeated Republican candidate and sitting Senator Darby Hills to win the 26th Senate District seat. She will now represent the people of the district in the upper house of the Illinois State Legislature.
Nabeela was born to parents from Hyderabad who moved to the US in the 1980s. She first came into the spotlight in 2022 when she won a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives shortly after graduating from college. She was re-elected in 2024 and has now achieved another major milestone in her political career.
Aruna Miller and Nabeela Syed are not the only Democrats to make history in these elections. Democrats registered major victories, taking control of Congress and delivering a strong setback to Donald Trump and the Republican Party. The Democratic Party secured control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, marking a major blue wave across the country.
