Even as the cries of agony continue to echo in the blood-stained valleys of Pahalgam, the future of this beautiful tourist destination looks uncertain a day after the barbarous terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 27 innocent tourists and injured over 20 tourists. For the first time in 35 years, the streets of Pahalgam are covered by stoic silence, fear, and sorrow amidst a curfew-like situation.

Various organisations have called for a total Kashmir bandh on Wednesday in Pahalgam in protest against the brutal terrorist attack and to stand in solidarity with the victims. The residents and traders across the town voluntarily supported the bandh. Schools, shops, and offices remained shut across the tourist destination on Wednesday. With tourists leaving Pahalgam, the future of tourism in the valley looks uncertain, at least for the next few years.

On Tuesday night, hours after The Resistance Front’s militants opened fire on the innocent tourists in the Baisaran Valley, hundreds of locals staged a massive protest against the heinous attack and held a candlelight march. A local resident named Syed Adil Hussain Shah tragically lost his life while saving tourists during the attack.

The entire Pahalgam region and various parts of the Kashmir Valley have been carpeted by patrolling policemen, Indian Army soldiers, and the political leaders from the state and New Delhi. PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are under fire from angry Indians across the country who have demanded a “strong” retaliation against the militants and Pakistan. Modi and Shah are currently in Kashmir, overseeing the security measures and consoling the victims’ families.
