YS Vijaya Lakshmi’s memorial meeting on the eve of YSR’s 12th death anniversary invited a lot of eyeballs for many reasons. All the political parties across Telugu states, political experts, observers thought this memorial meeting had a hidden agenda. But Vijayamma was successful in keeping the memorial gathering as just her personal invitation.
When it was the turn of Vijayamma to address the gathering, she got emotional and she battled her tears. “YSR always stated that his political journey was tangled with the public and every moment he strived to do something for the poor. That’s how he earned a place in everyone’s heart in the Telugu states,” said Vijayamma.
Recalling a couple of incidents wherein noted politicians were impressed by YSR’s work, Vijayamma said, “I still remember the day when Rajeev Gandhi was full praise of YSR. Then former PM Manmohan Singh personally told me that it was because of YSR, Congress turned into a formidable political force. Even current PM Narendra Modi said his party did not pay homage to other party leaders but it was only YSR who was honoured. Such is YSR’s stature.”
Of course Vijayamma is a non-political person, yet in between she tried to raise certain issues but as she is not an effluent orator, Vijayamma fumbled constantly. Concluding her speech Vijayamma thanked everyone who graced the evening irrespective of political affiliation.
