Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is visiting Rome for the G20 summit, met Pope Francis on Saturday in Vatican city. This was the first meeting between an Indian PM and the Pope in more than two decades, said the Ministry of External Affairs.
“Had a very warm meeting with Pope Francis. I had the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues with him and also invited him to visit India,” tweeted Narendra Modi. The meeting of Modi and Pope was scheduled for just 20 minutes but it lasted for an hour.
Both PM Modi and Pope Francis discussed Covid-19 pandemic and its consequences across the globe. The Pope appreciated India’s assistance to countries during the pandemic by providing vaccines.
Late PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the last PM to meet the Pope. Vajpayee met Pope John Paul II in the year 1999.
