BJP Announces Draupadi Murmi As Presidential Candidate

BJP-led NDA names Draupadi Murmu as its presidential candidate for the upcoming elections. JP Nadda made this announcement during a press conference on Tuesday.

Draupadi Murmu is the former governor of Jharkhand. If elected, Murmu will be the first tribal president of India and the second woman president in the country.

PM Modi, party president JP Nadda, defense minister Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, and others were present at the meeting. PM Narendra Modi also tweeted about Draupadi Murmu saying she devoted her life to serving society and empowering the poor, downtrodden as well as the marginalized.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties including Congress, NCP, and the TMC elected Yashwant Sinha as their candidate for the presidential polls. In the meeting convened by NCP chief Sharad Pawar, the opposition unanimously agreed on Yashwant Sinha’s name for the common candidate.

Earlier, there were reports that BJP top brass has approached Venkaiah Naidu to replace current President Ramnath Kovind, but the announcement at the end of the day is in complete contrast to it.
