A rather unusual incident happened in the parliament today as the elections were held to select the speaker of the house. This is against the usual tradition of the leading party unanimously nominating the speaker. This year, the INDIA alliance fielded competition for the speaker post, and this necessitated a relevant election to elect the speaker.
The election was completed a few minutes ago and as expected NDA’s candidate Om Birla won the same. This was just a formality, considering that NDA anyway had the required majority to win the speaker election.
Om Birla won against INDIA’s candidate K Suresh in the race to be elected as the speaker of the house. This is his second time holding the post after having held the same last term as well.
Om Birla was subsequently seated on the speaker chair and this process was cordially held by Modi and Rahul Gandhi as it is a tradition for the ruling party leader and opposition leader to take the speaker to the podium. With this, the suspense on the speaker’s election draws to a close.
