One Nation One Election, But 3 Taxes For Popcorn

The NDA government is looking extremely determined to impose the ‘one nation one election’ procedure by the end of their ongoing tenure. The bill was presented in the parliament and subsequently approved as well. The legal recourse is underway now, and this should be wrapped up in the due course.

However, this audacious plan by the central government is drawing largely polarised reactions from the common public. People are starting to question the need to go for such a hectic electoral role in India, which happens to be the largest democracy in the world and consequently, having the biggest electoral roll anywhere on earth.

There are several social media reactions to this Jamili Election proposal by the NDA government.

There are several memes and satiric trolls on social media about the India government, having the audacity to impose three different taxation slabs on simple popcorn, but going after the largely robust singular electoral roll. This satirical dig is in view of the new taxation on branded, unbranded, and caramel popcorn that was imposed by the GST council.

“The government has diverse planning and execution on imposing three different GST levels for simple popcorn that we buy in cinema theaters. This shows their indecisiveness and incoherence. But when it comes to the all-important general election, they want to be firm on it and take all of the country to polls on one day and that too with great conviction.” A sarcastic netizen commented.

A few people are commenting that seasonal assembly elections across different states in the country is an accepted and feasible plan. This way, the voters in individual states can adjudicate the central government by either supporting them in the assembly polls, indicating that they are happy with the central, or rejecting them, thus implying they are not pleased with the regime.

With seasonal assembly election, the ball is in the court of the nation’s voters as they get to let the Center know of their reactions. But with the Jamili election plan, all of parliamentary and assembly elections will be held at once, leaving the voters across the country with no say for the next five years. This takes away the leeway that the voters had all these years.

The current consensus appears to be that the people are opposing the one nation, one election proposal outweigh those who are supporting it. Interestingly, enough, even the opposition INDIA alliance which must be pleased by possible early polls is brutally against this implementation, which pretty much sums up the issue.
