Social media is buzzing about the Waqf Act and the amendments the Modi government plans to make. According to the new bill, the government can facilitate the better utilization of Waqf properties. However, the opposition argues that the government’s move is an attempt to seize Waqf’s properties. Let us dig deep into the issue to understand the controversy better.
The bill was initially introduced in the Lok Sabha in August last year but faced strong opposition. Today, the Central government reintroduced the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 in the Lok Sabha.
In Islamic tradition, a Waqf is a charitable donation to benefit the Muslim community. Since Waqf properties are considered to belong to God, they cannot be sold or repurposed. These lands are often used for constructing mosques, madrasas, cemeteries, and orphanages. However, many Waqf lands have allegedly been occupied illegally.
Some Waqf Board members are accused of violating rules by allowing squatters to take over Waqf properties. Hence, the government plans to amend the Waqf Act. Many Muslim groups have also admitted this. On the other hand, MP Asaduddin Owaisi has alleged that the proposed changes aim to take away lands from Muslims.
According to the Waqf Act of 1995, these properties should be managed by state-level Waqf boards that include government-appointed members, Muslim public representatives, members of the State Bar Council, Islamic scholars, and Waqf property managers.
