Donald Trump has caused fresh confusion over tariffs, especially on electronics like smartphones and computers. Just days after his administration said these items were exempt from new tariffs, Trump and his team are now saying that’s not really the case.
Trump’s commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, said in an interview that the tariff break was only temporary. He added that new taxes on important parts like semiconductors are coming soon—possibly in a month or two.
Trump later posted on Truth Social, saying he would announce new tariffs on Monday and warned that any relief from tariffs would be short-lived. “Nobody is getting off the hook,” he wrote, taking a strong stance against China.
Here’s what’s happening:
Market Confusion: Stocks in tech companies like Apple and Nvidia were expected to rise after the exemption news. But now, investors are unsure what will happen next.
Tariff Talk: Trump claimed there was never a full exemption for electronics. Instead, he said the products are just being moved into a different “tariff bucket.”
Semiconductors Targeted: These are key components in almost all electronics. New taxes on them could raise prices on phones, computers, and more.
As of now, everyone—from investors to consumers—is waiting to see what Trump will actually announce on Monday.
