Terrorists Target Tourists in Pahalgam, Multiple Casualties Reported

Several tourists were killed and many others were injured after terrorists opened fire on them in the Pahalgam region of Indian-administered Kashmir on Tuesday. The condition of two of the injured is reported to be critical. This is the biggest attack in Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370.

The mountainous area Pahalgam is a popular tourist destination in south Kashmir. On information, security forces tried to reach the site but the difficult terrain is posing a problem. The terrorist attack, claimed to be by an offshoot of the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, targeted group of tourists including women and elderly.

According to reports, two gunmen opened fire on the tourists, without any warning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who left for Saudi Arabia, called Union Home Minister Amit Shah to review the situation. Modi reportedly told Shah to visit the place of attack. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah refrained from disclosing details about the death toll. He said it was yet to be ascertained.

The attack precisely took place at Baisaran, which is 6 km from Pahalgam, as many tourists flock to the place to witness the expansive meadow of pine forests and mountains. It is called as ‘mini Switzerland’. Terrorists opened fire at the tourists found at eateries, taking pony rides and just watching the place.

Extra security forces, including Army, CRPF and local police were rushed to Baisaran, which became silent following the attack. Reports said that many tourists have started leaving the place in groups.
