After the TDP alliance’s big win in the elections, the YCP is quickly losing its grip. Once, YCP controlled almost all local bodies. Now, many of those have started slipping away. On Monday alone, the alliance took over three key municipalities — Visakhapatnam, Guntur, and Kuppam.
In Kuppam, which is Chandrababu Naidu’s home turf, YCP was in power until recently. But after some Councillors switched sides, TDP’s Selvam was elected as the new municipal chairman with 14 votes, including support from a TDP MLC. This is a big blow to former minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, who had once declared that YCP would wipe out TDP in Kuppam.
Similarly, in Visakhapatnam, YCP had earlier won the Mayor post despite struggling in the city. But after several corporators shifted loyalty to the alliance, an no-confidence motion was passed against YCP Mayor Venkata Kumari. In the fresh election, the alliance candidate Peela Srinivasa Rao was elected unanimously as the new Mayor, with support from both Jana Sena and BJP. YCP boycotted the election.
In Guntur, a similar story unfolded. Former YCP Mayor Manohar Naidu resigned after losing support. In the recent election, alliance candidate Kovelamudi Ravindra won the Mayor seat with 34 votes, while YCP could secure only 27.
Overall, in just one day, the alliance managed to wrest control of three major municipalities from YCP, marking another big setback for the party.
