The YSRCP has suffered a major jolt with the arrest of its senior leader and former minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy. He was taken into custody by Andhra Pradesh police at the Thiruvananthapuram airport in Kerala while allegedly trying to leave the country.
Acting on a tip-off from airport officials, police from Nellore rushed to the spot on Sunday morning and arrested him before he could board an international flight. He is expected to be brought back to Andhra Pradesh after securing necessary permissions from local authorities.
Multiple Cases and Evasion
Kakani has been facing three separate criminal cases, two of which are linked to illegal mining activities. TDP leader and former minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy had filed a complaint in January, accusing Kakani of unauthorized quartz mining. Following this, tribal communities in the mining region also lodged complaints, alleging harassment and property destruction, which led to an SC/ST Atrocities case being filed.
Despite several summons from investigating officers, Kakani failed to cooperate with the ongoing investigations. Police had even visited his home in Nellore and reportedly searched for him in Hyderabad.
His attempt to escape from Thiruvananthapuram has not only stunned YSRCP leaders in Nellore but has also sent shockwaves through the party’s leadership across the state.
