The previous YSR Congress government implemented a highly questionable liquor policy where the quality of the liquor was agonisingly poor and a strict cash-only policy was imposed at outlets. All of this amalgamated into one big Andhra Pradesh liquor scam, which involves several YCP senior leaders.
After the onset of the new NDA government in Andhra Pradesh, things are starting to change rather quickly with the introduction of the new liquor policy and quality liquor products for sale.
Now that the infamous scam is being investigated, and the bad old days are done and dusted, the new reports regarding the excise department are projecting a positive upswing.
In the excise department, a revenue of ₹4900 crores in 2023, ₹5000 crores in 2024, and ₹5681 crores in 2025 was generated. An additional ₹800 crores in revenue has been registered during the NDA government’s tenure.
Even though liquor prices were reduced, the volume of drinkers didn’t increase significantly and hence, the government earned ₹800 crores in revenue.
The issue with the previous government, and it’s a questionable liquor policy was the siphoning off of funds from Andhra Pradesh. Transaction books were largely compromised and funds were diverted left right center.
The fact that the new government is able to generate substantial profits when compared to previous government even with lower prices is an indication of the fiscal mismanagement that happens in the previous tenure, an expert remarked.
