After having made fun of Chandrababu between 2019 and 2024 for barely having opposition leader status, YS Jagan ended up receiving such a poor public mandate that he was not even granted opposition status by the public. The tables turned completely, and Jagan is now taking legal routes to gain the desired opposition status.
Considering the fact that Jagan’s YCP secured only 11 seats in the assembly elections, he is far from the opposition leader status, which requires 18 seats. Subsequently, both the government and the speaker of the house rejected his proposal to be named the opposition leader.
It is the decision of the people of Andhra Pradesh to give Jagan 11 seats and deny him opposition status, so it is not within the jurisdiction of the speaker to override this public mandate by granting him opposition status.
However, frustrated by this ruling, Jagan has now approached the High Court. In fact, he moved the court to overrule the judgment delivered by the speaker on February 5 and somehow grant him the opposition leader status.
As shocking as it may sound, Jagan appealed to the court to invalidate the speaker’s verdict and term it unconstitutional. But the numbers and judgments are very clear, and there is adequate precedent as well. Yet, that did not stop Jagan from moving the High Court in this case.
