Andhra Pradesh’s electricity consumers are finally getting some relief after years of being burdened with heavy electricity bills during the YSRCP tenure. The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) has taken a very significant step for the first time since its establishment in 1999, it has ordered a refund to the people instead of demanding more charges.
APERC found that Electricity Distributors (DISCOMS ) had over-collected money from consumers under the Fuel and Power Purchase Cost Adjustment (FPPCA) mechanism which was discussed in 2023. Against their claim of ₹2,758 crore, only ₹1,863 crore was allowed. Since DISCOMs had already collected nearly ₹2,787 crore by levying 40 paise per unit, the excess amount of ₹923.55 crore will now be refunded.
This refund, around 13 paisa per unit, will be adjusted in monthly bills between November 2025 and October 2026. Every consumer will see the benefit reflected in their bills that could be seen as a major welcome move for households already struggling with rising costs.
Earlier during YSRCP’s rule, consumers were burdened with true-up charges of nearly ₹18,567 crore between 2021–22 and 2023–24. Families had to suffer under inflated bills while the government of the day turned a blind eye and in fact looted the common people under the guise of true-up charges.
Now, under the leadership of CM Chandrababu Naidu, the coalition government has shown that it stands with the people. Instead of squeezing households, it is ensuring that money wrongfully collected is returned. This marks a clear difference in governance: YSRCP looted under the name of power bills, while the present government is cleaning up the mess and protecting consumers.
This refund is not just about money but is about trust, accountability, and putting people first in the government.
