Telangana state government has sanctioned ₹1,000 crore for the development of Osmania University (OU). This is the highest infrastructure upgrade ever approved for a single university in India, making it a historic moment for the century-old institution.
Osmania University, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in India, has long been in need of large-scale infrastructure upgrades. Spread across a vast campus, the university serves thousands of students every year across various disciplines. However, many academic buildings, hostels, laboratories, libraries, and basic facilities require renovation and modernisation.
The sanctioned amount will be used for comprehensive infrastructure development within the University campus. While specific project details are yet to be announced, the funding is expected to improve classroom facilities, research infrastructure, student hostels, roads, sanitation, and other essential amenities.
This investment is likely to enhance the academic environment and overall student experience. Education experts and student groups have welcomed the decision, calling it a long-overdue step. They believe that upgraded infrastructure will strengthen Osmania’s role as a leading public institution and improve its national and international standing
This is a major political step by the current government, especially because Osmania University students were central to the Telangana statehood movement. After the formation of the state, however, OU and its student community did not receive the attention they deserved. Many students felt ignored during the previous BRS government and the university saw very little development for nearly a decade.
Now, the Congress government has made a strong and timely move by sanctioning ₹1,000 crore for the modernization of OU. The announcement also comes at a time when the Telangana Rising Summit is showcasing the state’s investment potential and job creation plans.
With this massive infrastructure upgrade, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy hopes to reclaim the lost glory of Osmania University, which was once one of the leading institutions in India. The decision has come as a welcome surprise for students, alumni and educationists, who see this as a long-overdue correction and a positive sign for the future of higher education in Telangana.
