India is gearing for a major change in how it collects information about its people. The Union Cabinet has approved the Census of India 2027, and for the first time, the entire process will be done digitally. This marks a big shift from the traditional paper-based method which was in use for decades.
The census will take place in two stages. The first stage, called the Houselisting and Housing Census, will be held from April to September 2026. The second stage, the Population Enumeration, will happen in February 2027. In cold and snow-bound areas like Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the population count will be completed earlier, by September 2026. To carry out this huge task, around 30 lakh field workers will be on the ground.
The biggest change is the use of a mobile app for data collection. Instead of filling long forms on paper, enumerators will enter information directly into the app. A central online portal will help monitor the process and ensure that the data collected is accurate and reliable.
This digital method is expected to save time, reduce errors, and make the entire exercise much smoother. Another important feature is the introduction of Census-as-a-Service (CaaS). This means that the data collected will be made available to different government ministries in a clean, easy-to-read digital format. It will help officials access information quickly and use it to plan better policies and programmes.
The government also aims to share census data with the public in a user-friendly way. Once the process is complete, citizens, researchers, and students may be able to explore information through simple digital tools instead of waiting years for printed reports.
India’s first digital census shows how technology is becoming a part of everyday governance. If the system works as planned, it will make the process faster, more transparent, and more useful for planning the country’s future.
