Panchaayti Trends Not Encouraging for BRS!

The second phase of Telangana panchayat elections has sent a clear signal, and it is not a positive one for the BRS. Congress backed candidates continued their strong momentum, winning a large number of village sarpanch positions and reinforcing the party’s growing grassroots presence.

Out of nearly 4,000 gram panchayats that went to polls in this phase, Congress supported candidates secured a clear majority. Despite expectations that BRS would bounce back after the first phase, the results showed little improvement for the party. BRS managed to win only a limited share of seats.

The party had hoped that higher voter turnout in the second phase would work in its favour. Polling was brisk, with voters lining up in large numbers, even beyond the official closing time in several places. However, the increased turnout did not translate into gains for BRS. In many areas where voting percentage rose, Congress still emerged on top. Even in villages with low turnout, Congress dominance was visible.

The BJP managed to secure a small number of seats, enough to maintain some presence, but the larger contest clearly remained between Congress and BRS. Another key factor that hurt BRS was the strong performance of independent candidates. They won a significant number of positions, cutting directly into the BRS vote base and disrupting its calculations.

What stands out is that even two years after the assembly elections, BRS has failed to regain neutral or swing voters. Political observers point to a growing trust gap between the party and rural voters. This lack of confidence appears to be playing a major role in the party’s continued setbacks.

Adding to the discomfort for BRS is the fact that several villages visited earlier by KCR daughter Kavitha ahead of the elections ended up supporting Congress backed candidates. Her outreach programs across districts like Warangal, Karimnagar, Nalgonda, and Mahabubabad have now become part of the political debate, with critics claiming that the results in those areas further hurts BRS.
