Vijayawada To Get Kerala-styled Houseboats

To boost the state’s tourism, Vijayawada inspired by Kerala’s famous backwater tourism, will soon start luxury houseboats on the Krishna River. This is the first time such a concept is being introduced in the city, and officials believe it will attract both tourists and locals looking for a peaceful leisure experience.

The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department is taking this initiative as part of the AP’s new tourism policy announced earlier this year; it will work in coordination with private operators. These houseboats are being designed on the lines of Kerala’s popular models, combining traditional style with modern comforts. The aim is to give visitors a relaxed river cruise experience in Andhra itself without having to travel all the way to Kerala.

Each houseboat will include well-furnished bedrooms, A/Cs, attached bathrooms, dining space and proper seating arrangements. Safety arrangements like life jackets, trained staff and navigation support will be mandatory. Authorities have clearly stated that strict rules will be followed to ensure passenger safety and to protect the river ecosystem.

In the first phase, around 20 houseboats are being planned out. Tourists will have options for short cruises as well as overnight stays. Special packages like sunset cruises and family outings are also being considered. Local Vijayawada and fish food will be served, which will also include some fresh fish caught from the Krishna River for the tourists.

This project is also expected to create good employment opportunities for local youth, including boat staff, guides, cooks and maintenance workers. Officials estimate that each boat can support several livelihoods directly and indirectly.

With already popular attractions like Kanaka Durga Temple, Bhavani Island and Prakasam Barrage, these houseboats could soon become another major highlight of Vijayawada. The government hopes that by 2026, river tourism will emerge as a strong attraction for the city and city.
