What’s Up? Rahul Gandhi Supports Vijay’s Jana Nayagan!

While uncertainty continues to prevail over its release date, Thalapathy Vijay’s farewell film Jana Nayagan seems to be becoming a flashpoint for a political slugfest at the national level. The latest statements from Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in support of the film have further strengthened the ongoing rumours regarding potential alliance between Vijay’s TVK and Indian National Congress.

Voicing his support for Jana Nayagan, which has been caught in a censor turmoil, Rahul Gandhi said the attempt to block the film’s release is an attack on Tamil culture. He took to X and backed the film with a scathing post on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His post immediately gained traction on social media platforms and national media circles and become a talking point among political circles.

He wrote “The I&B Ministry’s attempt to block ‘Jana Nayagan’ is an attack on Tamil culture. Mr Modi, you will never succeed in suppressing the voice of the Tamil people.” These remarks come a day after the makers of Jana Nayagan approached the Supreme Court against the stay order given by Madras High Court on granting the censor certification to the film.

This was not the first time Rahul publicly expressed support to Vijay. In 2017, when Vijay’s film Mersal faced hurdles over objections to its portrayal of the union govt’s policies, he attacked Modi and extended moral support to Vijay.

Last week, Congress leader Girish Chodankar, in charge of Tamil Nadu Congress, slammed the BJP-led Centre for weaponizing central institutions to target its opponents. He targeted Modi and said political disagreements were natural, but targeting an artist’s work is unacceptable.

His statements gave rise to the speculation that the Congress party might join forces with Vijay’s TVK and form an alliance in the upcoming assembly polls of Tamil Nadu. Now, Rahul Gandhi’s openly extending support to Vijay and his film will further strengthen these rumours.

As Congress party has the history of contesting Tamil Nadu elections by forming alliances with different parties, political observers believe that a tie-up with TVK this time cannot be ruled out even though there is no official confirmation so far. In 2021, DMK party led by Stalin forged an alliance with Congress and emerged victorious.

It would be interesting to see how the political scene unfolds in Tamil Nadu ahead of the high stakes political battle in the coming months.
