The Andhra Pradesh Assembly is witnessing a strange situation, with the opposition facing an existential crisis. On one hand, YS Jagan is not attending the Assembly, and on the other, his party MLAs are also conveniently skipping the sessions.
In this context, Assembly Speaker Ayyannapatrudu even proposed the idea of cutting salaries for MLAs who do not attend the Assembly. This came after repeated requests to Jagan and YSRCP MLAs to fulfil their basic duties in the House.
When this issue was raised before Jagan by the English media during his press conference today, he reacted in a very dismissive manner.
“Nobody is that poor to depend on the salaries they give. Let them do whatever they want,” Jagan said. The clear message from his comment was that YSRCP MLAs are not dependent on government salaries.
While the core issue here is the basic responsibility of an MLA to attend the Assembly, Jagan appeared more focused on the salary aspect while ignoring the constitutional duty.
It may be true that Jagan and his MLAs are wealthy enough to live comfortably without their salaries, but questions are now being raised about their commitment to the people of their constituencies when they continue to skip Assembly sessions. A social media user shared the video clip of Jagan’s comment, which has since gone viral.
