AP Poised for Big Gains from the New India-EU Trade Deal

The India–EU Free Trade Agreement, signed and announced today during the high-level visit of European leaders to New Delhi, has opened a major window of opportunity for the state of AP. From aqua exports to green hydrogen, the new Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and sector-specific partnerships can directly boost the state’s economy and benefit lakhs of individual farmers, workers and coastal communities.

One of the biggest gains will come from fisheries and aquaculture. India is a major supplier of shrimp and fish to Europe, and the removal or reduction of trade barriers under the FTA means Andhra’s aqua farmers can export more at better prices.

With new standards for sustainable fishing and investments in cold-chain infrastructure, small and medium farmers across districts like Nellore, Krishna, West Godavari and Srikakulam stand to benefit the most. A dedicated Ocean and Fisheries Dialogue between India and the EU will help improve sustainable practices, quality certification and export competitiveness.

The state’s main ports namely Visakhapatnam, Krishnapatnam, Gangavaram and Kakinada are also expected to see a jump in cargo movement. Faster clearances, simplified procedures and increased EU-bound exports, especially in seafood, electronics and pharmaceuticals, will strengthen Andhra’s role as a major trade gateway on the east coast.

Green energy is another area with potential opportunities. With its long coastline and existing industrial base, the state has been seeking to build green hydrogen hubs. The creation of an India–EU Task Force on Green Hydrogen perfectly fits these ambitions. It can bring European investment into hydrogen pipelines, export terminals and electrolyser manufacturing along AP’s coast.

The new India–EU Disaster Risk Management Arrangement is equally important for a cyclone-prone state like Andhra Pradesh. Stronger early-warning systems, climate-resilient infrastructure and quicker post-disaster response can directly protect lives and livelihoods. Even Andhra’s iconic products, like Araku Coffee and several horticulture items could secure stronger global branding once the India–EU Geographical Indications Agreement is finalised.

Taken together, these developments place the state of AP at the heart of India’s growing partnership with Europe. The state’s farmers, industries and coastal communities are among the biggest winners of this new chapter in India–EU cooperation.
