West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged a political conspiracy behind the death of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash at Baramati on Wednesday morning. Recalling that there was buzz on social media about Ajit Pawar being willing to leave the BJP just two days ago, she suspected foul play in the fatal crash. She said there was no security for people and political leaders in the country.
Hinting that probe agencies were being massively misused by the ruling party at the Centre, Banerjee said they had lost their credibility and independence. Her party, the Trinamool Congress, is facing serious challenges from the BJP in West Bengal ahead of the Assembly elections. She said she was deeply saddened and shocked after hearing the news of Ajit Pawar’s death. She also took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over discrepancies in the SIR.
Mamata Banerjee is among several political leaders who demanded an impartial probe into the plane crash that claimed the lives of Ajit Pawar and five others at Baramati. RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav also called for an impartial investigation.
The BJP hit back at Banerjee, accusing her of politicising Pawar’s death during a time of mourning. West Bengal BJP election co in charge Biplab Deb said Banerjee was alleging a political conspiracy even though Ajit Pawar’s uncle Sharad Pawar and cousin Supriya Sule had not raised any doubts.
Ajit Pawar was on his way to Baramati to address four public meetings in view of the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections in Maharashtra when the crash occurred.
