The alleged adulteration of ghee used in Tirumala Laddu has triggered a major political and emotional debate in Andhra Pradesh. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu addressed the media, speaking not only as the head of the government but also as a devotee of Lord Venkateswara.
Chandrababu said the issue directly concerns the sentiments of crores of devotees. He recalled his personal faith, stating that Lord Venkateswara is his family deity and that he has long observed rituals with deep belief.
Referring to the recent controversy, he alleged that irregularities took place during the previous YCP regime and that the sanctity of the sacred laddu was compromised. He made it clear that the matter would not be ignored and that action would be taken against those found responsible after a thorough review of reports and committee findings.
The Chief Minister also questioned the YCP claims that investigative agencies had given a clean chit. As CM he stressed that no report ruled out the possibility of adulteration. He insisted that protecting the purity of temple traditions is the government’s duty and warned against what he described as attempts to mislead the public.
Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan echoed similar concerns. He said matters related to temple prasadam are extremely sensitive and should not be politicised. He pointed out that reports mentioned the possible presence of vegetable oils and even animal fat traces in ghee samples, which makes the issue serious. Pawan stressed that when faith is involved, leaders must speak responsibly and avoid casual dismissals.
Minister Payyavula Keshav added further details, stating that multiple ghee samples were sent for testing and that the findings raised alarming questions. He said complaints had earlier been received from devotees about changes in taste, texture and aroma of the laddu. According to him, laboratory reports indicated the mixing of various oils, and he alleged that procedural lapses during the previous administration allowed such practices.
On the other hand, the YS Jagan and his YCP repeatedly denieing wrongdoing and accused the ruling government of exaggerating the issue for political gain.
